About Me

Thanks for visiting! My name is John, 24 years old.

I've loved movies since I was a kid. More generally, I've loved stories all my life, and movies are my favorite form of storytelling. Film is a unique artform for containing so many other artforms within it - elements of literature, theater, photography, and music are found in every movie. A good movie can transport you to fantastic new worlds or help you see the mundane world around you in a different, more appreciative light. A movie captures in time faces and places from different eras and different parts of the world, making them a uniquely powerful tool to understand humanity and our history.

Writing about movies is how I think about them. The amateur criticism on this blog is my exploration of movies' themes and artistry, my way of understanding and appreciating them more - if I can help any readers do the same, all the better! Don't consider my reviews recommendations or anything like 'objective' takes on a movie's quality, which is why I don't give them grades or star ratings. And a word of warning to spoiler-phobic readers - my reviews often describe the events of a movie in detail. I also have a profile on the film website Letterboxd, where I write more casual thoughts on the movies I'm watching.
